SiMS data into third party products. Users commonly request the ability to manipulate SiMS generated reports within third party products, particularly word processing and spreadsheet applications. Any SiMS report written to the Printer backup file can in turn be exported - as ASCII text or WordPerfect format files - to a chosen destination on your network for use within other applications. Simply select the file you wish to export, click on the export button and select the export format, directory location and file-name of your choice.
Record locking. The SiMS system employs a time background processor to facilitate the large volume of time posted by our clients. Certain firms have experienced locking problems with time entries within the background processor. We have found the cause of these locking problems to be a procedural one. SiMS is a real-time system and as such utilises record locking to maintain database integrity. Users must be aware that whenever they are putting information into the system - either as new records or amending existing data - they will retain sole use of certain database records. Generally this is not a problem as SiMS will recognise that a record is in use by another user, will generate a message to that effect and will continue processing when the lock is released. Problems arise, however, when procedures are started and left incomplete - perhaps when the user is interrupted by, say, a phone call or a visitor. Until that procedure has been completed and the lock(s)released other users will not be able to access certain records This is especially noticeable within the time background processor as time records are processed in strict order relating to when they were posted. If a time entry is backed up awaiting the release of a locked record, all other entries subsequent to that posting will also remain unprocessed. It is vitally important that users take care to ensure that they complete tasks - particularly Registry/matter maintenance which has been identified as the most common cause of locking - as quickly as possible, returning to a SiMS menu whenever a task is complete. Draft billing and its effect on financial balances. Users should be aware that time and disbursements included within an unconverted computer bill will be reflected within the billing guide screen and printed enquiry but not matter summary and financial ledger balances. Simply double click on your chosen disbursement type within the billing guide for a breakdown of unbilled/drafted balances.
